On January 23, 2014, the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH) will conduct a street count of individuals who are homeless in Richland County as part of the 2014 Point-in-Time Count. This count is coordinated by the South Carolina Coalition for the Homeless.
The count is not only a statewide survey, it’s a nationwide effort. The information collected is critical because it is a necessary step in documenting the extent of homelessness in our state. This information is also used in funding applications to maintain and expand homeless programs in local communities. The count identifies the scope and trends of homelessness in our state, which can be used to improve services.
We need volunteers who have experience working in social service settings or directly with homeless individuals. The 2014 count will begin Thursday, January 23, 2014, and will continue through Sunday, January 26, 2014. We will send out street teams in two shifts on Thursday night, and we will have volunteer shifts available throughout the weekend, as well. We will serve a breakfast from 5am-8am at the Christ Central location on North Main Street and we are also in the process of adding at least one additional meal location during the weekend. A telephone bank of volunteers will also be contacting veterans and families with children in Richland District One schools who are homeless to complete surveys by phone.
Multiple training sessions will be held in December and January at both daytime and evening hours and all volunteers must attend a training session. Specific training dates, times, and locations will be announced soon.
For planning purposes, please let us know by Friday, December 13, 2013, if you plan to volunteer for the 2014 Point-in-Time Count by contacting May Kirby at MKirby@mirci.org or 803-381-1822.
We look forward to hearing from you!
